Iodine Whole Body Scan

Preparation Requirements
Total duration of study:

48 hours

Scanning time:

Approximately 60 minutes

Pregnancy:

Medication:

Eltroxin medication must be stopped for 6 weeks. Eltroxin therapy may recommence 48 hours after Iodine administration with the acknowledgement of your referring clinician.

Alternative to Eltroxin withdrawal:

rhTSH recombinant human TSH is approved by American Thyroid Association and is administered as follows: 0.9mg rhTSH i.m.i on two consecutive days, followed by 131I administration on the third day

Biochemistry:

Serum TSH and T4 levels 4 weeks after eltroxin has been stopped.

Optimum:

If blood TSH levels are > 50, schedule scan.

Satisfactory:

If blood TSH levels are > 30, schedule scan.

Diet:

Low iodine diet prior to study

Allergy:

There is no conflict with Iodine allergy. The administered dose is less than the iodine content of a regular meal.

Hydration:

Patient is encouraged to drink water prior and during study
